My Preferences for Business Working Environments

Thanks for considering me as a future employee!

Over the years working in miscellaneous positions in different companies, I've realized that I don't want to work in certain business environments any more.

In order to explain my self a bit and in order to avoid unnecessary effort, I have summarized a few points here on this page.

Important: If your business environment does not fulfill the large majority of the issues listed here, I'm sorry to tell you that I won't switch my current job which - believe it or not - ticks almost all of the boxes here.

Note that this list is not only related directly to the mentioned software. Business environments are merely a result of the company philosophy that defines those environments.

Furthermore, you might have noticed from my web page that using great tools is also an important factor to me. And I do have developed my own opinion on what software is able to support any business in an optimal way. I'm totally aware that this differs from most company environments for various reasons. You can get more insight into those decisions when you follow my public talks.

• There is no Microsoft Exchange/Outlook combination (for security purposes)
• There is no Microsoft Teams I need to use
• There is no Microsoft Sharepoint I need to use
• There is no ActiveDirectory which is accessible from the Internet (for security purposes)
• OpenSource software is the dominant part of the company environment in general
• I don't have to log my working hours
  • If I have to, it's optimized for minimum manual effort and maybe even offers easy to use and well-documented (CSV-)API that allows for external tools of my choice

• I may choose among multiple notebook hardware options (lenovo preferred)
• I may get my own ergonomic keyboard hardware for about 600€ for the office
• I get a Thunderbolt dock to easily connect the notebook with the other office hardware via USB-C/Thunderbolt
• I get at least two 24" TFTs (4K), one of them is being able to be rotated 90 degrees
• If I need to have a company SIM card, I may choose among multiple mobile phone options that run stock Android (no vendor-specific software; Google Pixel devices preferred)
  • Alternatively: I may use my personal multi-SIM phone and use the company SIM card as my only data SIM card also for personal use.

• I've got administrator permissions on my computer
• I've got free choice for the operating system of my computer (my current GNU/Linux distribution)
• I may use my own software for personal task- and project management
  • I'm fine with duplicating tasks in company systems if they are depending on other people
• Internet access may be used for appropriate private purposes as well

• There is the option of working from my home office for at least half of the working days
• There is the option of choosing a four-days-week, e.g., working Monday through Thursday with Fridays off
• I get support for visiting international conferences related to the topics I need to work with
• I get support for conducting lectures at universities during my working hours
• I can do research-related work in my working hours as well
